Preschools Strike to Protest Radiation in Ramat Beit Shemesh
After corresponding with the Ministry for Environmental Protection and receiving noncommittal answers, the struggle against the antennas on Dolev Mall is reaching a new level.
Many parents whose children attend the cluster of preschools in the vicinity: Elah, Dolev, Luz, Yarden, Efroni are angry that their children are within 75 meters of the antennas atop Dolev Mall.
“It cannot be that we send our children to preschools where a health risk is present. It’s as if you had someone on the roof shooting beams of radiation at us and our children all day… who would agree to such a thing? We have to stand up and shout that this cannot continue even one more second,” said one of the residents.
The Strike
The Committee for the Fight Against Antennas is calling for these preschools to strike on Friday, 21/5/10, 8 Sivan, for two hours, from 8-10 AM. Immediately following, the children will return to their preschools as usual. Parents and children that arrive at the preschool in the morning will be directed to Park Dolev, next door, where a protest against the antennas and reading of Psalms will take place. There will also be entertainment for the children.
Local Problem with National Implications
The Committee for the Fight Against Antennas reports that educational leaders in the city have been approached to help with this struggle. “We know that those responsible for education in this city are interested in removing the antennas, and spoke forcefully against them at the “Conference of Residents for Antenna Removal” that took place three weeks ago at the Ramat Beit Shemesh Matnas. It is time to raise the activity level and bring this issue to the top of the city’s priorities and to raise the issue to a national level. Parents are justifiably worried about the constant exposure of their children to radiation emitted from the antennas. The most feasible solution is to appeal to the cellular companies and to the owner of the Dolev Mall’s roof rights Ream Azulay with an uncompromising demand to relocate the antennas to hills, outside the populated areas, at a safe distance.
Who should approach these parties? Those who govern the city, whose children and preschools fall within their jurisdiction. Everything that happens within the city limits is ultimately their responsibility… and in addition, the law is problematic regarding this issue.”
We are happy to help by increasing understanding and cooperation between the parties to bring this struggle to a successful conclusion. Note that this week in Mevaseret Zion and Rehovot, the planned placement of antennas was successfully prevented.
An important court hearing
The Committee also reports that a meeting took place between the Deputy Mayor and the city’s Legal Advisor, in which progress was made with the representative for Environmental Health, Mr. Mordechai Dirnfeld, and his assistant, Mr. Moshe Gross. Next week, on May 25, 2010, a hearing in the Beit Shemesh courthouse will take place regarding a Desist Order issued against Cellcom. Currently this order has been rejected and the antennas are active, but the matter will be revisited in court on the 25th. It is very important that residents come to the courthouse entrance on that day to protest the injustice being done to the residents. If the judge rules in favor of the city and the residents, a precedent will be set for removing the antennas.
