The Whole Truth About Cellular Radiation:

1. The antennas are not dangerous.

False. Multiple studies (also in Israel, at Sheba and Kaplan Hospitals and at the Weizmann Institute) have demonstrated a direct link between exposure to cellular radiation and a significant rise in the likelihood of developing growths, headaches, neurological disorders and harmful exposure to pollutants.

2. Low radiation levels are not dangerous.

False. At high levels of radiation, the body’s antioxidants rush to protect damaged areas, but at low levels of radiation, the body does not immediately detect the threat and activate its antioxidants; the effects of radiation are treated by the body’s natural defenses only at a later stage.

3. The Israeli standard for acceptable radiation exposure is more stringent than other world standards.

False. The Israeli standard allows 40µW/cm2 (microwatts per sq. cm.) and 100µW/cm2 for 3rd generation phones, whereas in other places (such as Italy, Switzerland, Russia, Canada and others) the permitted level is only 2.4-10µW/cm2. Note that the Salzberg standard in Austria allows 0.1µW/cm2. Studies show that radiation levels between 0.2-8 microwatts are liable to cause leukemia (cancer of the blood) among children near transmitters.

4. More antennas, less radiation.

False. Antennas emit radiation 24 hours x 365 days a year, and a single call from a cellular phone call significantly raises the level of radiation in the area. In addition, even those who do not use cellphones (for instance, children) are continuously exposed to radiation. In practice there have been increased instances of cancer in areas close to antennas (in Usfiyah, Beit Shemesh, Kiryat Gat and other places).

5. Maintaining a distance of five meters from an antenna is sufficient.

False. According to experts there should be at least a 150 meters of distance (some say 200 meters!). Our children’s “ganim” are 75 meters from the antennas!!!

6. There are conflicting studies on health effects of cellular antennas.

The Ministry of Health established the “Principle of Preventative Caution”, that is, that if there is a possible health risk not to take chances (and accordingly, not be test subjects). Therefore, we should initiate efforts to reduce the possible dangers that transmitters may cause.

7. There is no proof that children are more vulnerable.

¨False. The Israeli Health Ministry recommends special caution regarding children because they are particularly susceptible to cancer-causing elements.

8. There is precedence for having many antennas in a single location.

False. On the roof of the Dolev Mall there are at least 12 antennas (it’s not yet clear how many Mirs antennas there are) belonging to all four of Israel’s cellular companies – something that does not exist anywhere else in the country (12 times the radiation of a single antenna!!!).

9. Nothing can be done, we can’t fight the big cellular companies.

¨ False! We, the residents, can do a lot! Similar struggles within Beit Shemesh (Nahal Lachish, Nahal Dolev and Shvil HaGihon) and elsewhere in the country (Ramat Gan, Givatayim) successfully lobbied to remove antennas. We are acting in a number of channels: legal, municipal and in the near future, by means of a public protest, the details of which appear below.

Weizmann Institute Research: Live cells react to radiation from cellphones. The Marker 2/9/07:

A new study from the Weizmann Institute reveals that live cells react to radiation emitted from cellular phones. According the study, conducted by Professor Roni Zeger, a cancer researcher with the Dept. of Biology, and Dr. Yosef Freidman, human cells react to cellular phones emissions by creating ERK, a natural substance that spurs the growth and division of cells. Professor Zeger stated that the levels of emission used in the study were a tenth of those emitted by most cellular phones.

“As research studies accumulate, it is harder to hide the fact that the findings stubbornly indicate a heightened risk of growths following long-term cellphone use. These findings are the result of independent studies conducted by researchers such as Prof. Hardel, who found an increased risk of contracting cancerous growths in the brain.” (ynet)

“Is the risk from cellular radiation greater for children than adults?”

Absolutely, and this has three causes:

A) The resonant frequency of children’s heads is closer to the 700 MHz frequency used for cellular phones, whereas the resonant frequency of adults’ heads is about 400 MHz. therefore the head of a child absorbs 30-40% more energy. (Sonbaron and colleagues, 1998)

B) Children have many more dividing cells, and their DNA is more vulnerable.

C) Children have more vulnerable nervous systems (Dr. Zamir P., Shlita, 22.11.2003)

Successful Struggles:

“Victory for Chanita residents in the fight to remove cellular antennas”.

In September residents of a Givatayim building discovered on their roof a wireless transmitter, which last week was removed by Cellcom. (Haaretz, 18.05.09).

“Yesterday (8/12) a month-long struggle to remove a Cellcom antenna from the roof of the Givatayim mall bore fruit, when the antenna was removed by the company. This step by Cellcom came as a result of ongoing dialog by local residents with Givatayim Mayor Reuven Ben Shachar, the Givatayim Mall manager, a vice-president of the Azrieli Group and extensive media coverage. Cellcom was presented with a demand to remove its antenna.”

Kiryat Gat: 20% of the students at Shprinzak School have left.

Seven students in the school have developed cancer in the past decade; five have died. The most recent case was discovered last month and the concern of parents has increased as the new school year approaches. (Ynet 31.08.09).

Declaration of the Health Ministry:

The Health Ministry recommends acting with “preventative caution” in cellular use. It further recommends distancing children from cellular phones because they are especially vulnerable to cancerous growths. (Globes, 27.07. 07)
